Facebook positioned itself as a prime news delivery tool for its users — averaging 1.37 billion people using the platform daily — but this could soon change.

So if you got to this story from Facebook, congratulations, we’re happy you made it here.

On Jan. 11, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg posted on Facebook that public content from businesses, brands and media will be seen less frequently in news feeds. News feeds will change to prioritize posts from users’ friends and family, and decrease the likeliness that public posts from publishers like the Midland Daily News will be displayed.

According to a 2016 study from the Pew Research Center, two-thirds of Facebook users are using the social media platform to get news — that’s about 44 percent of the general population. Unless you opt in to prioritize public posts from publishers like the Midland Daily News, Facebook posts from the local newspaper will be de-prioritized on your news feed.

Luckily, it’s not too hard to sidestep the algorithm change. Preferences on your Facebook newsfeed can be changed on a desktop computer or laptop, or a smartphone.
