Haryana: National-Level Kabaddi Player Says Parents Had Locked Her Up For Days

National level kabaddi player alleges she was locked up for days by her parents

New Delhi:  A national-level woman Kabaddi player from Rohtak in Haryana, has alleged that she was locked up for days by her parents who are forcing her to get married. She claims she has escaped with great difficulty and wants to “continue with studies and sports”.

The player has written to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and the Director General of Police, complaining against her parents.

The player, who represented her state in many tournaments, claimed in September 2017, her father took her to Karnal and tried to force her to marry a man much older to her. After she refused, she was locked up for several days and her parents once again came to take her after she fled from Karnal to Rohtak.

She has now approached the Haryana Women’s Commission to help her with her sports and studies. In her letter to the state women’s commission, she said she fears for her life and wants action against her parents who live in a village on the outskirts of Rohtak.

“I have faced several hardships in my sporting career but persevered till I represented Haryana at the national level,” she wrote in her letter, and is now waiting for a response from the state government.
Sportswomen of Haryana have been making the country proud but in the recent past several cases of atrocities against women show that little has changed. As per the National Crime Records Bureau, most cases of sexual assault on women have been reported from Haryana in 2016. Despite tall claims by the Khattar government of making Haryana safe for women, the state saw a spate in gangrapes and murders in December and January.
